10: Fort Alexander
Fort Alexander is one of the most mysterious abandoned places in all of Russia. The fort is sitting on a man-made island just off the coast of Finland. It is a fortress filled with historical secrets and many Soviet mysteries. The original installation was crafted in the middle of the 1800s with the intent of guarding Saint Petersburg from enemy attack. This was an incredible feat for the time considering that the entire island was built by human hands. The foundation sits on a set of beams installed directly into the sea floor. How they did that in the 1800s is quite frankly shocking!
9: Waverly Hills Tuberculosis Hospital
The Waverly Hills Tuberculosis Hospital is yet another mysterious abandoned place that was once used for the treatment of medical illnesses. It operated from between 1910 and 1961 in Louisville, Kentucky. It was then closed for two years before operating as a geriatric center from 1963 to 1981. The enormous building was initially designed only to house 50 patients. It wasn’t until tuberculosis turned into an epidemic that the building was enlarged.
8: The Crystal Mill
The Crystal Mill is also known as the Sheep Mountain Mail, and it’s one of the most gorgeous abandoned places in all of Colorado. The Crystal Mill was built as a wooden powerhouse in 1892 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places roughly 100 years later in 1985. But what’s really unusual and kind of mysterious about the Crystal Mill is that even though it was built as a powerhouse, it never had electricity and still doesn’t.
7: The Church of Saint-Etienne-le-Vieux
The Church of Saint-Etienne-le-Vieux is one of the most mysterious abandoned religious buildings in all of France. The church was once a Roman Catholic church, but today it stands in ruins. It’s located in the ancient city of Caen, and it was classified as a historic monument back in 1903. But not a lot is known about the origins of the church. It’s quite a mystery.
6: Hashima Island
Hashima Island is arguably the coolest abandoned place in all of Japan. It’s also one of the most mysterious! The history of Hashima Island is incredibly complex. What we do know is that when human settlements are abandoned, it only takes a few years for nature to reclaim what was taken. This is evident from modern photos of Hashima Island, also known as Battleship Island because of its resemblance to a battleship. The city is located 9 miles (15km) from Nagasaki, in the middle of the ocean, and it was once a hub for undersea coal mining.
5: Abandoned Albanian Artillery Base
In a little European country of Albania, there is a very cool artillery base located on the side of a cliff. The base is abandoned, mysterious, and a grim reminder of Eastern Europe’s troublesome past. Looking from the outside, you almost can’t even reckon the abandoned artillery base. It’s nothing more than a foursquare hole in the side of a rural cliff. According to the BBC, the entire area was off limits from between 1946 and 1985, back when Albania was ruled by a ruthless absolute leader.
4: The Arcade Barn
The first arcade games were invented in the 1920s. You had shooting galleries, games where you tossed a ball to win a prize, and other machines operated by coins that would spit out mechanical music and entertain Worldwide’s youth. Then in the 1930s, pinball machines were introduced and the public went wild. It wasn’t until 1972 that pong was introduced to the world as the first successful electronic video game. Then between the 1970s and 1980s, arcades exploded across the United States. Today, these games are outdated and undesirable. Arcades are dead in Worldwide, surviving only abroad in places like Japan and Korea.
3: Old Cahawba
Old Cahawba is a mysterious abandoned ghost town located in Alabama, which might actually be the creepiest place in the USA. The town was carved straight out of the swamps in 1819 and actually became the first capital of Alabama.
2: The Sweetwater Manufacturing Company
The Sweetwater Manufacturing Company was once a prosperous business. It’s now a forgotten ruin sitting in the forest just outside of downtown Atlanta. But this factory has a horrifying past. The land was initially purchased back in 1845, and then the factory opened in 1849. It produced thread, yarn, and cloth.
1: The Rose Island Amusement Park
The Rose Island Amusement Park is one of the creepiest abandoned places you can find in the United States. It’s located on the north bank of the Ohio River and was once a prosperous outdoor amusement park. It had a mini zoo, golf, and other attractions. The belongings was purchased in 1923 by a prominent businessman from Louisville.
